You want to be an Estate Agent.

So you want to be a negotiator?

So as not to waste your time, we’ll start by telling you the wrong reasons’ for wanting to get into this industry;

  • You are good at/ have an interest in or have studied interior design.
  • You want to be a property developer.
  • You have watched a few episodes of Location Location and think it looks like fun.
  • You want to be a mortgage broker.
  • You want to become a landlord or buy-to-let investor.

Estate Agents will only employ people who want to be Estate Agents. Getting into Estate Agency is not a stepping stone to becoming a property developer, buy to let investor or mortgage broker.

Being an interior designer does not qualify you to be a good Estate Agent.  You are selling the property, not decorating it!

ADVICE:

If there is one piece of advice we can give you, it would be not to call us or any estate agencies proclaiming a long-standing interest in getting a job in the industry, without having proof you have spent some of that time looking into the job and have a decent knowledge and understanding of the role.  Remember that estate agency is not an easy industry to get into and it is highly competitive.  We speak to hundreds of people at trainee level on a weekly basis.  We will only be able to help the candidates who show the most potential and knowledge as these are the ones displaying initiative and pro-activity that will flourish once placed.  To give yourself the best possible chance of standing out when you call, make sure you are fully prepared for a telephone interview.

What not to talk about in an interview:

  • Never go into an interview at an Estate Agency and ask about how much time you get off or how many breaks you get in a day.  Successful estate agents are money motivated and target-orientated people. They would much rather spend their 20-minute lunch break doing an extra viewing  as opposed to eating their lunch and having a nice rest.  This is the mentality you must portray.
  • How many days sick pay you get.
  • How bad your last company or manager was, it’s not professional.
  • That you want to open up your own Estate Agency one day.

We are here to help so it’s perfectly fine to call us and ask intelligent questions. We’re not however here to school you in the dummy’s guide to selling and letting property.

Now ‘the right reasons’ for wanting to do this job;

  • You are motivated by great financial reward.
  • You are looking for a career that you can progress in quickly with good honest hard work.
  • Like a challenge.
  • Have a confident “can-do” attitude.
  • You understand people.
  • Not afraid of long hours in order to get results.

It was once said Estate Agency is 90% people and 10% property, if you understand people you will have no problem with finding them the property of their dreams and doing very well in Estate Agency.
